There is an element of choice that lies at the core of our existence. And the degree of delicacy that we hold life is perhaps the most defining quality of our kind. The height of hypocrisy is to promote the destruction of our own life while claiming to promote life’s extension everywhere else. Every single thing we do today will either speed deaths walk, or slow it down. We all have a choice, and it’s time to choose. For the earth is all we know, and we must pay to play the human way.

So, I’m on a flight that just left Los Angeles and is somehow going to end up in Portland. Keep in mind that Portland is North of L.A., and we just took off headed directly west. WELL… this got me thinking.

I’m writing all of you today with an update on our little family.  There are a number of people that I meet who are absolutely glowing, and overflowing with stories of change and progress.  And, this number seems to be increasing exponentially!  People have changed their lives forever, by simply wanting to.  I can’t tell you how it makes me feel when people share their stories of finally pursuing a life long goal, or of weight loss and inversely proportionate happiness.  The number of public proclamations is truly overwhelming, and while the journey has just begun for some, others have already made SIGNIFICANT changes in their lives.  In a world where no one will stop a cell phone call long enough to assist a fallen grandmother on the street, I find arms outstretched everywhere in our little community here.  I’m very proud of all the people that came out of the woodwork to offer assistance to Maggie, and I truly believe that one day SHE will be the one offering a “hand up”.  Maggie, you kick ass!  In the immortal words of George Michael, “you gotta have faith”, which, as it turns out, is nothing more than believing what you cannot see… and who’s reward is seeing what you cannot believe.  I do know that some goals are hard to see from a distance, but just know that their approach is slow… but certain.  “Special” is located deep inside of absolutely everyone, and we were all born with a shovel.  You just have to pick it up, and keep digging until you find it.

You have to go out and find your “special”, because trust me… it’s not going to come looking for you.  -Sean Patrick Flanery

If you keep the truth in your back pocket… you’ll spend your whole life standing.

I went bobbing for apples at the Thanksgiving day state fair when I was around six years old.  There was a teenage eskimo named Elsinore that ran the apple booth that I knew from down the street.  I knew him because he worked the crosswalk on schooldays and would always help the younger kids get across the busy intersection.  I think I was the only one that ever spoke to him as we waited for the traffic to clear.  He was different, angry, and always looking up into the sky, like it was too much trouble to just tilt his head down to see who you were.  I stood in line at the fair and tried to get an apple a total of seven times that day and never once even came close to biting into one.  Elsinore said that my mouth just wasn’t big enough to wrap itself around a big apple yet, much like some brains aren’t big enough to wrap themselves around some ideas.  He said that he couldn’t change the apples, but not to worry because the years would change my mouth.  Elsinore always said weird things, but I liked him anyway.

One day at the crosswalk I asked him what it was like to be an eskimo, if he’d ever seen any elves, and why they would EVER choose to move away from Santa!!  Elsinore said that he used to not believe in any of that stuff, but that his identical twin sister Elsie, who still lived in an igloo up at the North pole certainly did, and that she convinced him… and then he proceeded to tell me a story about believing, the same story that Elsie had told him.

Sono andato ad afferrare mele con la bocca alla Fiera del giorno del Ringraziamento quando avevo circa sei anni. C'era un eschimese adolescente chiamato Elsinore che gestiva la cabina di mele e sapevo che abitava in fondo alla strada. Lo conoscevo perché aveva lavorato sulle strisce pedonali durante i giorni di scuola ed aiutava sempre i ragazzi più giovani ad attraversare l’incrocio trafficato. Penso che io fossi l'unico a parlare sempre con lui mentre aspettavamo che il traffico fosse sgombro. Era diverso, arrabbiato e guardava sempre in cielo, come se fosse troppo disturbo inclinare la testa per vedere chi eri. Sono rimasto in fila alla fiera e ho cercato di prendere una mela per un totale di sette volte quel giorno e non sono mai arrivato nemmeno vicino a morderne una. Elsinore ha detto che la mia bocca non era abbastanza grande da avvolgersi attorno ad una grande mela, come molti cervelli non sono abbastanza grandi da avvolgere alcune idee. Ha detto che non poteva cambiare le mele, ma di non preoccuparmi perché gli anni avrebbero cambiato la mia bocca. Elsinore ha sempre detto cose strane, ma mi piaceva comunque.

Shakespeare was WRONG!! “To be or not to be” was NEVER the question. The question is, was, and will always be… to dream or not to dream.

First, let’s talk about “dreams”, and exempt all those non-dreams; the “wants”, the “desires”, the “it would be kinda neat to…” etc.  Because a REAL dream is something that drives you every waking moment of your life, realigns your self discipline, and compels you to recalibrate your “give up” point.  Dreams are the things that move otherwise stationary people so much so… that they just keep on going. REAL dreams defy logic, but it’s the faulty logic that comes from underestimating one’s abilities.  REAL dreams require unreasonable actions, and that is why I despise reasonableness with zenith of gusto.

No man would ever become exceptional if not for his willingness to be unreasonable in the pursuit of his dreams.

Shakespeare aveva TORTO !! "Essere o non essere" non è mai la domanda. La domanda è, era e sarà sempre... sognare o non sognare.

In primo luogo, parliamo di "sogni" ad eccezione di tutti quei non sogni; i “vorrei”, i “desidererei”, i “sarebbe un po’ vicino a…” ecc. Perché un sogno REALE è qualcosa che ti guida ogni momento di veglia della vostra vita, riorganizza la tua disciplina personale e ti costringe a ricalibrare il tuo punto di "rinuncia". I sogni sono le cose che muovono le persone altrimenti stazionarie... che continuano ad andare avanti. I sogni REALI sfidano la logica, ma è la logica difettosa che vi fa’ sottovalutare le proprie abilità. I sogni REALI richiedono azioni irragionevoli ed è per questo che disprezzo la ragionevolezza con zenit di gusto.

Nessun uomo sarebbe mai diventato eccezionale se non per la sua volontà di essere irragionevole nel perseguimento dei suoi sogni.

Today’s Moral Decay

You know, they say the devil is in the details.  I agree.  He creeps in incrementally every time we stop paying attention, and in such small amounts that it’s almost imperceptible.  On a day to day basis, the change is hardly even noticeable.  But, over the course of years the current era is almost unrecognizable as a brother of the past.  If we are to undergo any sort of correction in our moral decay, it has to start with our youth.

Sai, dicono che il diavolo è nei dettagli. Sono d'accordo. Egli si insinua gradualmente ogni volta che smettiamo di prestare attenzione, e in piccole quantità che è quasi impercettibile. Ogni giorno, la modifica è difficilmente evidente. Ma, nel corso degli anni, l'attuale era quasi irriconoscibile come fratello del passato. Se dovessimo subire qualsiasi tipo di correzione nel nostro decadimento morale, deve partire dalla nostra giovinezza.

Hello, my name is Sean Patrick Flanery, and I’ve been leaving a trail for the last few years, so I’m glad that you noticed.  I think it’s important that people know who you are, what you stand for, where you’ve been and where you’re going.  But, it’s even MORE important to know all these things about YOURSELF.  The first step to a better life is in the proper analyzation of your current state, position, and being.  After all, a problem properly defined is a problem half-solved.  I intend for this place to be a “collective”.  A place where, with the combined knowledge and insight of the entire community, no question or problem will go unsolved.  Let’s all help each other to look at his or her world from new & sometimes strange new angles.  I’m certainly not perfect, but I’m more than happy to share the handful of things that I DO know.

The comments portion will be a little forum for all to contribute, criticize, protest, testify, and even holler.  I’ll sometimes post old blogs that we can revisit as well.  I’ll include links to everything that I’m involved with like THIS!! , or THIS!!!!

Ciao, il mio nome è Sean Patrick Flanery, e ho lasciato un percorso negli ultimi anni, quindi sono contento che l’hai notato. Penso che sia importante che la gente conosca chi sei, che cosa sostieni, dove sei stato e dove stai andando. Ma, è ancora PIÙ importante conoscere tutte queste cose su TE STESSO. Il primo passo verso una vita migliore è nell'analisi corretta del tuo stato attuale, della sua posizione e dell'essere. Dopo tutto, un problema definito correttamente è un problema interamente risolto. Ho intenzione di fare di questo posto una "collettivo". Un luogo dove, con la conoscenza combinata e l'intuizione di tutta la comunità, nessuna questione o problema risulterà irrisolto. Aiutiamoci tutti a guardare il suo mondo da nuovi e talvolta strani angoli. Certamente non sono perfetto, ma sono più che felice di condividere la manciata di cose che so.
